Play around with this technique at home with markers of different colors (just repeating a black marker won't get you extra credit), or maybe even different liquids, using coffee filters cut into strips (you can even use paper towel, but it doesn't work quite as well). *Cut a strip of filter paper. *Put a dot of ink about 1-2 cm up from the bottom. *Place the bottom of the filter paper strip into a cup with a little bit of water in the bottom. (Be careful-- do not let the dot get under the level of the water, and do not let any of the top part of the filter paper get wet, or the water won't be drawn upwards correctly.) *Let the process continue until the water has been pulled almost to the top of the strip of filter paper. *Take out to dry. See which ones are mixtures. Take photos and label your finished chromatography strips. You can even set up a nice data chart if you want, but that's not required to get the extra credit. I am attaching an interesting article for those who want to go beyond and get some ideas. 1 point of extra credit
