Testing for Artist 2
24-25
Date Due
April 30, 2025
Additional Info
Produce at least two different tests for your second Artist using your new photography/resources.
Experimenting with different ideas can help us avoid the ‘painting the photo’ trap that leads to a cap on the amount of marks you can achieve for AO1.
Testing can take many forms but there are two distinct types of testing:
- Medium testing - you might want to use a medium to experiment with as part of the testing process. This should answer questions like ‘how can I use this medium to depict my subject in a certain way that links to or enhances my theme?’ Or ‘if I combined this medium with that one, what would that change about the message of my artwork?’ Or ‘if I paint in this style, how does that compare to this style? Which one do I prefer?’ By showing your working, the examiner is able to understand your thought process. You are showing the examiner how your ideas are evolving in your sketchbook towards the goal of a meaningful response.
- Conceptual testing - literally meaning ‘idea testing’, this refers to anything you do to make your initial ideas more interesting/impactful/‘deep’. This could include experimenting with different compositions ‘if I put the person upside down, how does that change the meaning of my artwork?’ Or it could involve researching something, using another artist to inspire you, etc.
- Sometimes a test can develop both your ideas and use a medium to do so. That’s the best kind of test!
Ultimately, the testing process is all about answering the questions ‘Will it work?’ and ‘What will it look like?’ and ‘Is this the most successful conclusion to my initial idea?’
