Chem A (double) - Complete POGIL (see below)

2019-2020

Chemistry (A)

Date Due

Jan. 9, 2020

Additional Info
  • Complete the POGIL activity we started in class -- including the extension at the end--about combustion reactions.
  • FOCUS on WRITING WORD EQUATIONS for all of the questions that ask you to make predictions or write reactions. For example, if I were given a chemical such as "aluminum oxide" and told that it "decomposes," and I were asked to write a reaction to describe it, my WORD EQUATION would be: aluminum oxide yields aluminum + oxygen
  • If I were given "magnesium reacts with zinc chloride"  I would write "magnesium + zinc chloride --> magnesium chloride + zinc"  ( a single replacement reaction!)
  • The next step is to write the proper chemical formula underneath each word, which is what you learned in Chapter 7. For the first example above, I would write: Al2O3--> Al + O2 (with the numbers as subscripts). Then, to balance it, I would write:  2Al2O3 -->  4Al  +  3O2
  • We will learn how to balance in class, but if you remember how to do it from an earlier class, feel free to give it a go.  YOU SHOULD AT LEAST WRITE THE WORD EQUATION for all of the reactions and write formulas below the words, using the periodic table and your common ion sheet as needed.
