Additional Info
Sorry to miss you today. Annotate from p.187 - 217. Use the resources on OneNote and your own ideas.
  • Pay particular attention to Joan's letters. Joan's advice is unscrupulous and pragmatic but she has a clear effect on the plot here because Tess listens to her. Tess can shift the responsibility for not telling to her mum (we all do this!)
  • On p.207 look at Trantridge man as he will be important later.
  • On p.211 look at how Tess tries to confess. This is vital.
  • Note the heavy use of omens in the whole of Ch. 33. Focus is on the grotesque and anxiety and not the happiness of a wedding.
  • On p,217 - look at how Tess's ancestry rears its head - she is physically like the treacherous D'Urberville women. What does this foreshadow? Add to you list at back of the book.
  • We will start at p. 217 next week.
  • Don't forget the HW to start Phase 7th.
