Engineers look at products ("things") AND systems ("interactions between things") when improving design features or efficiencies. A product is generally a physical good such as a spoon and paperclip.  A system tends to be a network of interconnected parts that serve a given purpose, such as a highway system, an electric grid, or a forest.
